Approximately fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Police state they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then located numerous other marked vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say initial examinations suggest the substance was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A high-ranking official said the incident made him stunned and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he wrote on a platform, recalling the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
