Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.
British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."
In December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
