EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
